| Jazz Café
Picnics
What?
Not
so much a festival as a couple of days out in the park with some
good music. The legendary Jazz Café take to the less smoky
outdoors for another summer of lounging around England's stately
homes. This time there's two dates, one in July and one in August,
at some of London's grandest buildings. Kenwood House in Hampsted
is surrounded by gardens, lakes and the rolling hills of Hampsted
Heath, while Marble Hill in Richmond is set by the Thames in 66
acres of parkland. You can bring your own food and drinks but there
will be onsite bars. If the sun shines there won't be a nicer place
to be.
Where?
Kenwood House, Hampsted
Marble Hill, Riverside, Twickenham
When?
Kenwood House: Sun 10 Jul 2005, 3pm til late
Marble Hill: Sun 14 Aug 2005, 12pm til late
Who?
At first glance it may seem like the usual blend of chill-out favourites
but closer inspection reveals a clever and complementary diversity.
The Kenwood House show is headlined by the eccentric and lovely
Lemon Jelly, whose latest album '64-95'
revolved around samples taken from songs released between the years
of the title. In addition there's the ethnic-infused breakbeats
of Nitin Sawhney, the glorious psychedelic
rock of The
Earlies and Manchester-based world music group RSL
who will be making their live debut. Plus the legendary Louie
Vega, one half of Masters at Work,
will be playing a live house set with his band Elements
of Life.
The Marble Hill date features two
of the biggest acts from the chill-out heyday of the early noughties.
Norwegian duo Royksopp have a new album,
'The Understanding', out this summer,
while Morcheeba continue ploughing
their trade despite parting company with singer
Skye for their last record. The Herbaliser
also have a new album 'Take London' out
and their big band hip-hop show should be a treat, while Quantic
Soul Orchestra will compete for space on stage with their
big band funk set, featuring Alice Russell
on vocals. Highly rated MC K-Os
and the manic Acoustic Ladyland complete
the line-up.
