  Resound
Dublin Castle, London
06 Nov 2004

There is a circuit in London for up and coming bands where A&R men hang out, smoking cigars and talking to young girls whilst waiting for the next big thing to lug their own equipment on stage. The Bull and Gate in Kentish town for example, or the Anchor in Islington. The Dublin Castle, Camden Town is another such establishment – with sweating walls and Australian bar staff. These places are great places and, in time, should be given one of those blue plaques for services to rock music and beer.

Recent additions to this stage are Resound. Playing small town indie rock and supporting Ozzie band, The Volts, Resound used this gig to exhibit a much tighter, more consistent and well thought out live set than they have played before. Still not entirely comfortable on stage, the band did appear to be more confident, confident enough in fact to include a cover of Hendrix’s ‘Fire’ – an ambitious choice but one which they more than adequately pulled off. Special commendation should go to Resound’s drummer, Gavin Locke, for a fine Mitch Mitchell impression.

Punching out favourites such as ‘Five Draw’ – a possible single – and ‘Learn’, Resound showed that they can put together a coherent set that didn’t look like losing its audience at any point. Having had a decent sound check probably also helped as for once lead singer Nathan Waite’s vocals weren’t drowned out and the inclusion of backing vocals certainly added to the performance. A good night for the band and their dedicated fans.
